HELP SAVE BABY DANA’S LIFE
Parishioners Paul and Marie Sokhor have been working to help a little girl (Baby Dana) and her family who live in Marie’s birth country of the Ukraine. Baby Dana has been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1—a very rare and deadly type that usually takes the life of children before the age of 2. The progressive disease slowly takes away all voluntary and involuntary muscle movement as the nerves/neurons are destroyed, eventually making it impossible to breath and swallow on one’s own.
The family needs help in raising over $2 million dollars to get Baby Dana the life saving drug Zolgensma before the age of 2. She is currently 9 months old. This medication is a miraculous gene therapy that can reverse the damage and offer her a normal life. The sooner she can receive this therapy, the better. If this money can be raised, the family will travel to the children’s hospital in San Antonio, TX to get the one time, life-saving infusion.
Marie Sokhor has been in frequent contact with Dana’s mom, who is praying for a Christmas miracle to try and raise the funds by then. The family has currently managed to raise about $250,000. The wonderful thing in this case is that we have real hope, there is basically a cure and the only obstacle is money. But we serve a God with abundant resources and the generosity of St. Raphael parishioners has been witnessed by the Sokhor family who have been part of this amazing Catholic Community for over 40 years. All things are possible with God!
